Newman poked a single to right to score a pair of runners and turned a potential 5-4 loss into a 6-5 win. The 30-year-old former first-rounder has hit just .253 even with those four hits, and what was once an intriguing fantasy prospect is now someone who can be ignored on waivers. Monday was a good one, however. Jorge Polanco SEA Second Baseman #7 Jorge Polanco was removed from Monday’s game against the Royals with tightness in his right hamstring. Polanco exited the game and was replaced by Luis Urias, with Urias taking over at third and Josh Rojas moving to second. It’s a concerning development, especially for a hitter that has battled injuries over the last few years. There should be a further update on Polanco before Tuesday’s game against Kansas City. George Kirby SEA Starting Pitcher #68 George Kirby held the Royals to three hits with six strikeouts in seven shutout innings to help the Mariners to a win Monday by a 6-2 score. After struggling for the majority of his start against the Twins, Kirby bounced back nicely. As is usually the case, he didn’t put on any runners via walk, and he pounded the strike zone with 68-of-101 pitches going for strikes. When Kirby doesn’t have his best stuff/command the results can be problematic. He usually does. Kirby will face the Orioles next. Evan Carter TEX Center Fielder #32 Evan Carter hopes to be ready to return later this week after an MRI revealed only inflammation in his lower back. Carter missed a third straight game Monday due to the back soreness. Travis Jankowski is picking up extra playing time in his place. Rhys Hoskins MIL First Baseman #12 Rhys Hoskins said a hamstring injury caused him to leave Monday’s game and that he’ll have an MRI on Tuesday morning. Not good. One imagines the Brewers will bring Tyler Black back to the majors now. He was short-changed in his first opportunity, and he might well be a fine replacement for Hoskins. Bryson Stott PHI Second Baseman #5 Bryson Stott went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and two RBI on Monday, powering the Phillies to a 5-4 win over the Mets in a 10-inning marathon. Stott delivered late for Philadelphia, taking Mets stopper Edwin Díaz deep to lead off the ninth inning before tacking on a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the ensuing frame to put the Phillies ahead for good in a back-and-forth slugfest at Citi Field. The 26-year-old infielder has been on an absolute heater of late, batting .433 (13-for-30) with one homer and five steals in nine contests since the start of May, which obviously doesn’t include a two-homer explosion back on April 28. Shota Imanaga CHC Starting Pitcher #18 Shota Imanaga struck out eight over five shutout innings on Monday in a no-decision against the Braves. Imanaga continues to be an unexpected revelation in his Cubs debut, allowing two earned runs or fewer for the eighth consecutive start in this one. The 30-year-old southpaw silenced Atlanta’s formidable lineup, scattering seven hits and three walks over five scoreless frames. He induced a staggering 18 swinging strikes and finished with a 27 percent CSW, needing 98 pitches (58 strikes) to get through five innings. He’ll bring a sublime 0.96 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 51/8 K/BB ratio across 46 2/3 innings (eight starts) into a favorable home outing on Saturday against the Pirates. Austin Riley ATL Third Baseman #27 Austin Riley’s MRI showed nothing more than inflammation in his left side, according to the Braves. Consider Riley to be day-to-day. If he doesn’t feel better by midweek, the Braves could weigh placing him on the IL, but that’s not the plan for now. Zack Short will fill in at third base.
